The cyber mafia never misses an opportunity to launch attacks to trap and cheat internet users during any big event.
People fall prey to their devious schemes and end up losing their money and more importantly their confidential details.
One of the biggest sporting events the ICC World Cup is around the corner and it is being used as a bait by the mafia to launch phishing attacks.
According to a report by E security experts Symantec, several emails have been propagated in cyberspace targeting internet users in countries where matches for the World Cup would he held.
In India 29 matches would be held, so Indians are prime targets in the phishing attacks.
In one of such email traced by experts at Symantec, the senders have tried to lure victims with special offers and packages for the grand finale of the event. The email invite offers multiple executive club facilities like a private table, a gourmet champagne brunch etc for 10 guests.
Fake webpages with similar or names very close to the organisers have been created. Many of these URLs have been propagated through spammers on several social networking sites and through emails sent through zombie computers.
A IT expert said, “Users will be asked for credit card details to book tickets and packages along with their personal information which once submitted would be further used by cyber criminals leading to financial losses to the victim. Many such phishing attacks lead the user to fake webpages where the user could be targeted by password stealers to turning into a zombie computer which would further be under control of cyber criminals and victim would have no idea about it.”
