Here’s some good news for university cricketers. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) are set to revive the prestigious Vizzy Trophy. What’s more, Mumbai will host the inter-zonal tournament scheduled for the first week of February.
The tournament, which has produced stars like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sanjay Manjrekar among others, was scrapped in 2010 due to differences between BCCI and AIU over funding issues. However, the board has now decided to revive the tournament.
“The Vizzy Trophy is an old BCCI tournament and we have decided to revive it. It will be held in the first week of February in Mumbai,” BCCI chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty told DNA on Sunday. “This tournament has given us some good cricketers in the past. Reviving the Vizzy Trophy would give college cricketers a chance to showcase their skills and we might unearth some extraordinary talent,” Shetty added.
