Following in the footsteps of the Mumbai Marathon runners, it’s time for international cyclists to take the Bandra-Worli Sea Link for the Tour de Mumbai scheduled for February 21. The organisers of Tour de Mumbai — India’s first-ever international cycling event — have got the permission to use the sea link as a backdrop for the event. ID Sports chairman Akil Khan, whose firm is co-promoting the event with Sport 18, confirmed the news.
Khan also revealed that actor Salman Khan and four-time Tour de France winner Eddy Merckx will race with the international cyclists for the first few kilometres on the sea link before the race starts.
After completing a 12-km stretch on the sea link, the cyclists will proceed towards Bandra Reclamation for a 2.8-km route chalked out by race director David McQuaid.
“The cyclists will race 30 laps. The course has a bit of everything. We’ll use the flyover at the opposite end of the sea link toll plaza to come back to the course. It’s quite a challenge as it will have two bends — first is 90 degree and then 180 — which will make it interesting. On the slopes towards the sea link, riders can log up to 70kmph,” said McQuaid.
