After winning Britain's first Grand Slam title in 76 years, tennis ace Andy Murray is now gearing up to pop the question to girlfriend Kim Sears.

The 25-year-old Scot is poised to propose to Sears, 24, to cap a glorious victory over Novak Djokovic in New York that gave Britain its first Grand Slam winner since Fred Perry 76 years ago.

Those close to Murray said they are not surprised to hear he will propose to his partner of seven years, who was in the crowd to watch his triumph with the star's delighted mum Judy.

"It would not surprise me in the least to see him marry Kim now," the Daily Mirror quoted sports psychologist Roberto Forzoni, as saying, who worked with the new US Open champ for the Lawn Tennis Association.

"She has brought him a calmness off the court and helped him to settle down, she is the rock behind his success. She is someone Andy can really rely on, he has always been a shoulder for him to lean on in the hard times," he added.

Judy has described Kim as the "best thing that ever happened" to her son. The couple met in 2005, split briefly in 2009, but got together again within months and have been an item ever since.

"She is now enjoying the best time of his life with him. They are a perfect match," Forzoni added.
