American team for Savio Cup basketball tournament

Mumbai: Slam dunks, jump shots, electronic scoreboards and 24-second devices will be on view at the Savio Cup all-India basketball tournament, which kicks off at Don Bosco, Matunga, onNovember 2.


Four of the country's leading men's and women's teams, along with Shooting for Success men's team from the US, will vie for top honours at the seven-day tournament. The American team will start as favourites. The average height of their players is 6'5. The team had taken part last year as well but had come with their second string side. The organisers said this year the American side will be at full strength.

There will be round robin league matches, with the top two teams going on to play the final. A new addition to this year is the Junior Savio Cup which will begin from October 31.

Four school teams of boys and girls will get to experience the feel of playing on a teraflex basketball courts. Three matches are scheduled to be played everyday. Added attractions are the dunking competition and three-point shooting competition.

Teams:

Men: ONGC Uttaranchal, Services, IOB Chennai, Indian Railways and Shooting for Success US;

Women: Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Kerela State Electricity Board
