Italian Alessandro Petacchi, the leading sprinter on the Tour de France after winning two stages, is to issue a statement after media reports that he is being investigated over possible doping offences.
A spokesperson for his Lampre team said Petacchi was talking with his lawyers and would soon make a public statement.
Italian media said the 36-year-old has been given a legal warning saying he was being investigated.
A spokesperson for Italy's Olympic Committee (CONI), which acts as the country's anti-doping body, said he was not aware of the development. Police could not be reached for comment.
