Riding on the lone goal of the match scored by Sandesh Gadkari, Air India beat Mumbai FC in their round-17 encounter of the I-league at Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi on Saturday.

With this win, the Santosh Kashyap-coached team earned the all-important three points, which had been eluding them for a while in this edition of the championship. “We needed three points and they have done it,” said Kashyap after the match, which witnessed tension between the two teams.

Trouble started to brew when Air India’s Collin Abranches’s refused to pass the ball back to Mumbai FC after play was stopped due to injury to a player.

This led to a heated exchange of words between Abranches and Abhishek Yadav with their respective teammates joining in. It might have gotten worse but referee MB Santosh Kumar intervened and calmed the nerves. “There is always tension when we meet but that is only on the ground. We forget about it once we leave the playing arena,” said Kashyap.
