On the 7th day of Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Open chess tournament, Udeshi completed his 3rd IM norm whereas Rakesh Kulkarni along with Yashas D made their maiden IM norms.
It was a mixed bag day for Mumbai lad Aditya Udeshi. On the 7th day of Mumbai Mayor’s Cup International Open chess tournament hosted at Goregaon Sports Club, here, Udeshi (ELO 2316) completed his 3rd IM norm whereas Rakesh Kulkarni (ELO 2149) along with Yashas D ( ELO 2204) made their maiden IM norms. But unfortunately all three lost their respective games.
GM Kokarev Dmitry continued his half point lead over GM Alexey Dreev and GM Fier Aleksandr. Playing with white, Dmitry beat GM Khusnutdinov Rustam in a game of Sicilian defense. Dmitry managed to win two pawns in the middle game for which Rustam got minimal compensation in return. With very little left to do, Rustam resigned after 34 moves.
On 2nd table, top-seed GM Alexey Dreev defeated GM Kovalyov Anton of Argentina in a game of Nimzo-Indian defense. Alexey allowed exchange of Queens in return of a passed pawn on D file. Later on he placed his rook on 7th file which forced weakening of opponents’ king side pawns. He cleverly exchanged all the pieces and entered in king and pawns ending. This left Anton with no choice but to accept defeat after 47 moves.
Meanwhile, Udeshi lost his game against GM Thomas Luther in 34 moves, while Rakesh Kulkarni lost to Maharashtra GM Abhijit Kunte.
