Rohit Sharma has always been looked up for his talent and abilities but the 22-year-old has not been able to cement his place in the India side. Eyebrows were raised when the selection committee picked him for the West Indies-bound squad for the World Twenty20 but the Mumbai youngster cares a ‘damn.’ He wants to focus on his game rather than worry about the critics’ remark.

“I don’t care what they are saying. I just want to concentrate on my cricket rather than thinking what others are trying to say. I have always believed in enjoying my game and put my 100 per cent effort at whatever level of cricket I play,” the stylish batsman talking to DNA from Ahmedabad said The Mumbai batsman, who scored a crucial 49 on Friday against Rajasthan Royals, believes he has been in good touch. “I feel I am batting well and in good touch. Unfortunately we lost the match against Rajasthan Royals but I enjoyed my batting which is important,” a confident Rohit said.

Was he surprised when the selectors chose him in the 15-member squad? “I didn’t even know there was a selection happening. I don’t think about the selections and I just want to perform, play my cricket and score runs as more as possible,” he replied.

Rohit said he doesn’t take praise or criticism seriously. “At this stage, people will praise you if you are performing well and criticise if you don’t. But I will say this is a learning curve for me. I have been given an opportunity by the selectors to play in the World T20 and I will give my 100 per cent, try to perform well and hope to reclaim the trophy for the country,” he added.

For Rohit, the ongoing IPL is a good preparation ahead of the T20 mega event in the Caribbean. “It is the right opportunity to prepare for the World Cup. I would like to get straight into the rhythm from here. We’re doing well at the moment and have a good team. Everyone has been fantastic and I think we are on the right track for winning the title again this time. But we are taking match by match and not rushing,” he added.

Former Australia and current Deccan Chargers’s skipper Adam Gilchrist has been a big inspiration for Rohit. “He has been a big motivation for me. You get to learn so much from someone like him. He was very happy for me and congratulated me when he heard that I was picked for the Indian team for the WC,” he said.

Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey are the other youngsters who are pushing for berths in the national squad with their consistent performances in the domestic competitions, but Rohit is not threatened by it. “I don’t think about who is vying for what place. I am just concentrating on my performances,” he stated.

In the 2009 World T20 in England where Rohit was asked to open the innings in place of an injured Virender Sehwag, the youngster impressed only in the initial stages of the tournament including a 52 against Ireland before fizzling out in the latter part. However, he is ready for any role given to him. “I am all for the team. Wherever my team wants me to bat I will,” he signed off.
