The 2012 i1 Supercar Series has been postponed. It will be held in January next year. The reason cited for the postponement is the elections in Uttar Pradesh. The organisers have said the polls had an effect on the availability of the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.
“The first thing that hampered the series was the non-availability of the BIC due to the UP elections. The drivers were also not available as it was clashing with other events they were taking part in,” said M Darshan, CEO of Machdar Motorsports, the organisers of the series.
“We have discussed it with the teams and we collectively felt that it is better to postpone the series. But we will not just leave it at that. From April, there will be roadshows in the fanchise cities and the drivers will also be there. Once the fans get to know the teams and their colours etc., it will probably have a better impact next year,” Darshan added.
Darshan said that conducting the series next year would also give them time to plan things better. “There will be a lot of time so that we can plan things better. It makes sense not to hold it this year,” Darshan stated and said that the contracts will hold good and they want to send the series schedule to the International Automobile Federation (FIA) before the October deadline.
