The Mumbai weather has been cruel for the last couple of weeks. Playing in this heat and humidity is a task for players. More than them, though, it can get really tough for a passionate fan who sits the entire day for a glimpse of his favourite star. And what happens if he gets out without doing much? Along with the star, the fans, too, depart from the ground disappointed.

This was the story on Day Three of the Ranji Trophy tie between Mumbai and Punjab at the Wankhede on Saturday.

Close to 100 fans, seated in the open Sunil Gavaskar Stand, waited with baited breath for hours in the scorching sun to watch Yuvraj Singh take the crease. When the time came – more than 65 overs into the day – after Jiwanjot Singh (91) got run out, the handful crowd erupted in joy as the Punjab skipper climbed down from the pavilion.

The southpaw left the first ball. He then hit back-to-back shots off Shardul Thakur, first a classical square drive through gully followed by a beautiful cover drive.

To outfox the stalwart, Mumbai skipper Aditya Tare had to do something out of the box. He did it by bringing on part-time off-spinner Akhil Herwadkar. The move worked, as Yuvraj was cleaned up from behind the wicket while going for a sweep in the last ball of the over. He walked back after scoring 13 off 35 balls. And so did the crowd.

Yuvraj's dismissal gave hope to Mumbai of a victory after Jiwanjot and Mandeep Singh (82*) put together a 101-run partnership for the third wicket on a track that has turned flat. Punjab finished the day at 244/4, needing another 171 runs to make Mumbai bat again.

Earlier, Mumbai, resuming at the overnight score of 495/6, declared at 569/8 riding on Tare's unbeaten 137.
