The youngest player of the Australian Open tournament, teenager Belinda Bencic, has knocked out the oldest, Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan, in a fascinating first-round match.

16-year old Bencic from Switzerland beat 43-year-old Date-Krumm, who is also older than Bencic's mother, 6-4 4-6 6-3 in the two-hour contest at sweltering Melbourne Park.

According to News.com.au, the world number one junior player was making her Grand Slam debut while Date-Krumm was contesting her 47th major in a career spanning a quarter of a century, albeit including a 13-year hiatus. Bencic was inevitably dubbed the next Martina Hingis after winning the French Open and Wimbledon junior crowns last year and also being named Switzerland's sporting newcomer of the year, the report added.
