England may have won The Ashes 3-0 and are seeking a 4-0 win in the fifth and final Test, but Australia are trying to play mental games as they seek to steal a win in the final match.
Shane Watson and Michael Clarke tried their best to unnerve Kevin Pietersen as they indulged in a war of words with the batsman.
When Ian Bell walked out to bat during England's first innings, Watson reportedly told Pietersen he had to "look after the child". This jibe was a reference to Bell’s petite stature.
Pietersen replied saying, "Bell had 20 Test hundreds in comparison to Watson's 17" and so is better than the Australian batsman.
After Watson, Clarke tried to unsettle Pietersen who scored a 50 saying, "No one in your team likes you." Pietersen replied with a bang like he had done to Watson as he said with a shrug and a smile, "You’re captain and no one likes you."
The Australian team is understood to be getting set for the return Ashes later this year after their mauling in England. A win in the final Test will be a great boost to the visitors ahead of their December plans.
