Daniel Bryan, who shot to fame with the 'Yes Movement' back in 2013 after three years in relative obscurity in the WWE, announced on Twitter late last night (IST) that he would be retiring, and would announce this on RAW.
He also posted a moving, short video:
With RAW underway live right now, Bryan's retirement speech has been reserved for the main segment of the night.
Daniel Bryan, 34, known on the indie circuit as Bryan Danielson, became extremely popular in the summer of 2013, which led to him defeating John Cena clean at Summerslam 2013 for the WWE Title. However, WWE chairman Vince McMahon soon lost faith in Bryan, and began to slowly move him down the roster. Outrage from WWE fans and Bryan's incredible popularity helped him get back in the title picture.
After fans booed out the 2014 Royal Rumble because Bryan was not made a participant, WWE decided to change course and allow Bryan to win the WWE Title at Wrestlemania 30. He beat Triple H, then beat Batista and Randy Orton in the final match of the night to claim the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in one of the iconic moments in professional wrestling history.
Soon after however, Bryan's injury woes began to worsen. He lost all strength in his right arm, and on May 12, 2014, announced that he would be undergoing neck surgery. He relinquished the WWE Title and was out of action for several months.
On the December 29, 2014, episode of Raw, Bryan declared that he would be able to continue wrestling and would be participating in the 2015 Royal Rumble match. Though Bryan returned to the ring in January 2015, he would soon be out of action again, this time for good. Bryan was eliminated quickly from the 2015 Royal Rumble, causing another outrage among fans, and then lost to Roman Reigns at the Fast Lane event the next month, in a qualifying match for the No 1 contendership to the WWE World Title.
Bryan then declared his intentions to compete for the WWE Intercontinental Title and won the Intercontinental Championship ladder match at WrestleMania 31. Soon after however, he had to relinquish that title too, due to nagging injuries and a fresh concussion-related injury which would be revealed later. Subsequently, Bryan said he might have to retire.
Daniel Bryan's legacy will endure for probably being the most popular WWE superstar after the Austin-Rock era of the late 1990s, and being the one of the few ever to cause WWE to change their creative plans for the biggest event of the year via unprecedented fan pressure.
