Half centuries by skipper Faf du Plessis and swashbuckler AB de Villiers helped South Africa convincingly crush Mumbai by eight wickets in their final warm up game in build up to the World Twenty20, here today.
Four South African players JP Duminy, Farhann Beherdien, David Wiese and Imran Tahir played for Mumbai. Chasing a stiff 189 to win, South Africa overhauled the target with three overs to spare. Du Plassis, who punished all Mumbai bowlers, retired on 65 off 45 balls. He hit seven fours and a six. South Africa went from the word, cruising to 97 in 10 overs.
Hashim Amla and Du Plassis put on a 76-run stand before Amla, who hit four fours in the fourth over bowled by David Wiese, got out on 38. De Villiers, who walked in at number four, hit three massive sixes and four fours in his unbeaten knock of 52 off 23 balls. He along with David Miller (3 not out) took the side home.
Put into bat first, opener Akhil Herwadkar s half century helped Mumbai post a stiff 188 for six against a decent bowling attack comprising Dale Steyn, Kyle Abbot, Kagiso Rabada and Chris Morris.
Openers Herwadwadkar and Shashank Singh (29) shared a 75-run stand. The latter walked back to the pavilion after being cleaned up by A Phansigo. Herwadkar hit 8 boundaries and two sixes in his 61-run knock that came off 45 balls.
Dumiy made 22 in just 18 balls while Beherdien (6) fell cheaply. Young player Armann Jaffer and David Wiese then stitched another 50-plus partnership with latter scoring a quick fire 34 off 19. Jaffar also remained unbeaten on 24 off 12 balls.
For South Africa, Kyle Abbot, K Rabada, A Phansigo and R Rossouw took a wicket each while Dale Steyn did not get a wicket. The South African side continued batting for full 20 overs despite achieving the target in 17 overs.
