'Why the hurry?' No team for CT despite COA diktat

There is a general consensus in the board to use team selection as a "bargaining tool" in the ongoing tussle with the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, before taking it a bit too far, both sides now are waiting for COA's meeting with state cricket associations on Saturday.

Though a day has passed since the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators directed the Indian cricket board to pick team for the Champions Trophy immediately, the latter is yet to act in this regard.

Going by an insider's account, Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) two most important office-bearers — Amitabh Chaudhary along with Aniruddh Chaudhary — are going to take up this issue during their audience with COA chief Vinod Rai on Saturday. The acting president of the board, CK Khanna has not been consulted on this issue.

"Why such a hurry?" a senior BCCI member replied when asked about when they will pick team. "COA has not given any deadline in their letter and we're certainly going to abide by the directions," added the source.

There is a general consensus in the board to use team selection as a "bargaining tool" in the ongoing tussle with the International Cricket Council (ICC). However, before taking it a bit too far, both sides now are waiting for COA's meeting with state cricket associations on Saturday.

If COA feels that majority is in favour of sending team to CT, it may ask CEO Rahul Johri to convene meeting on Saturday.

What if the majority wants to pull out of the tournament?

"Let's wait for Sunday's special general meeting before jumping to any conclusion," the source said.

"We know how COA eased all the pressure created by two of our officials (Chaudharys) in Dubai post ICC Board meeting. All other countries were anxious to know India's stand vis-a-vis CT participation. But COA's statement the next day saying 'India will not withdraw' failed us completely," said a senior member of BCCI.

If majority in the SGM mandates to put pressure on ICC to review new revenue and governance model then there is every possibility that BCCI's eligible officials would move SC with their side of story.

"Just when we're trying to revive the dead deal, COA failed us. And none of us know if COA has any deal with ICC on revenue sharing. That's why BCCI secretary was not even briefed about earlier ICC meeting by anyone from the COA," claimed the member.

Bihar fiasco

COA has again sent an invite to Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) representative Gopal Bohra for the SGM. This despite knowing that the state body has been facing probe for not giving accounts of Rs 50 lakh being given by BCCI in 2009.

The COA has also failed to comply with SC April 10 orders of taking a final call on Pondicherry's affiliation. This despite a two-member committee of Anshuman Gaekwad and Prakash Dixit submitting its report to the BCCI.
