Sachin Tendulkar was all over television on Sunday, wasn't he? Here for some promotional events, the World Cup ambassador watched India hammer South Africa by 130 runs from the cozy confines of the corporate suite on Level IV of the MCG.
Sometime during the South African chase, his manager Vinod Naidu intimated him that another batting great wanted to meet him. Within seconds, Tendulkar came out to greet Barry Richards, the champion South Africa batsman whose international career was unfortunately cut short because of the Apartheid.
"Hey, you are looking fitter than before," the 69-year-old told his much younger friend. A shy Tendulkar could only respond with a sheepish grin. Just as we thought that the two batting icons would talk, well, about batting, Richards proved us wrong. In fact, they spoke about golf for a bit.
Soon, Richards asked, "So how's the family. And how old are your kids?" Tendulkar's response, "My daughter (Sara) is 17. My son (Arjun) is 15," Tendulkar replied. "So does he play?" was Richards's next question. "Yes, he is a bowler," Tendulkar said. A flummoxed Richards then said, "Bowling? Where did that come from?" Tendulkar smiled again. "Yes, he bowls left-arm pace." Richards was at a loss for words. "Left-arm, really?" he asked. "Yes, Tendulkar replied. Even I am ambidextrous."
Just then, R Ashwin got JP Duminy to reduce South Africa to 147/5. "Yes!" Tendulkar said. It was time for Richards to proceed to the commentary box for his final stint of the evening. The duo shared a hug. And Tendulkar went back to his suite watch India complete the formalities.
