England's out-of-favour batsman Kevin Pietersen said that he has been flattered by Australian legend Steve Waugh's critical remark that the maverick cricketer is now not worthy of a Test recall.

Waugh, who captained Australia's 1999-World Cup winning team, said on Monday that Pietersen might have been a great player but he wouldn't class him as one now.

Reacting to that, the sacked England batsman stated on Twitter that he grew up idolising guys like Steve Waugh, adding that it is quite flattering to see legends like Waugh commenting on his situation, Sport24 reported.

Pietersen, a veteran of 104 Test and 136 one-day caps for England, has been out of the national squad since his central contract was cancelled last year by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) following the team's Ashes washout by Australia.

Pietersen made a promising start in his bid to make an international comeback as he smashed 170 for Surrey against Oxford MCCU last week.
