New Zealand finally opened their account after a long wait in this tour of India in the second ODI here on Thursday.

While the late heroics by India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was the highlight of the match, it was New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson’s knock of 118 which laid the foundation for the first real contest in a series which started for the Kiwis here at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground with a practice game on September 16.

“The wicket wasn’t easy to increase the scoring rate. At the halfway stage, we were a few off where we wanted to be, but a lot of credit to our bowlers (for) the way they created pressure on that surface,” man of the match Williamson said after the victory.

The Kiwi skipper singled out his main strike bowler, Trent Boult, for his brilliant effort and match figures of 2/25 in his quota of 10 overs.

“Tent was outstanding. His bowling was huge for us, especially with the dew. We didn’t have enough runs to create a squeeze and dew was creating a problem for spinners. It was our seam bowlers who did the job for us,” added the 26-year-old.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni also credited Kiwi bowlers for keeping their cool till the end. “I feel this was one game where we lost wickets against the run of play. It was not that the deliveries were good but we just kept losing wickets. Until the end, we had the run rate under control,” said Dhoni, adding: “When you’re chasing you need to play 50 overs and at one stage it didn’t look like we would.”

On his part, Boult looked relieved at the much-needed win and credited smart bowling on a wicket which was holding up.

“It was really satisfying, for sure. It’s a good sign to see our bowlers putting the Indian batsmen under pressure. I was trying to remain aggressive but give as little as possible in the 49th over,” was how he summed up his effort on Thursday.
