Virat Kohli took to Twitter to condole Shaktimaan's death. He wrote: "Rest In Peace, you innocent soul"

Uttarakhand Police horse Shaktimaan, whose left hind leg was amputated after being allegedly attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Ganesh Joshi here last month, succumbed to his injuries despite all-out effort to save and rehabilitate him. Reacting to Shaktimaan’s death, Dr. Feroze Khambatta, a Mumbai-based surgeon who amputated the horse’s leg, said: ‘This is very sad for us. We are all very sad. It was unexpected, because the horse was recovering well and walking. However, he died before last phase of treatment.

A brave horse is died, and I think we should respect him.’ Jamie M. Vaughan, an U.S. expert treating Shaktimaan, said, ‘We are very sad. Everybody did everything possible and what happened today was totally unforeseeable. He lost his life.’ Vaughan has got prosthetic limbs for Shaktimaan from the U.S. Paying tribute to Shaktimaan, former chief minister Harish Rawat said, ‘It’s a painful moment. Shaktimaan, who was bravely battling for his life, finally lost the battle. Many people, including medical teams from abroad, made their effort to make Shaktimaan recover, but he succumbed to his injuries. Uttarakhand has lost one of her sons. Shaktimaan is not less than a martyr for us. He was a soldier who lost his life in the line of duty.’ ‘Shaktimaan was a police officer on duty and went through so much pain, which ultimately killed him,’ Union Minister for Women and Child

Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi told ANI. She, however, demanded that the culprits should be arrested for killing a police officer (Shaktimaan). Observing that horses should no longer be part of our police systems, the minister said, ‘They serve no purpose. In every crowd engagement, they are at the mercy of any vicious person, who is too cowardly to do anything but injure defenceless animal.’ Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sadanand Daate, said, ‘Everybody tried their best. Medical teams used to give him anaesthesia during his routine reconstruction and dressing, but today he collapsed in pre-anaesthetic phase due to shock. We lost one of our soldiers today. Rest in Peace (RIP), Shaktimaan.’

BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi, who had allegedly attacked the horse, said, ‘I am very sad. I have already said that I am not at fault; if I’m found guilty cut my leg.’ However, another BJP MLA Ajay Bhatt said, ‘We are saddened. The state government is to be blamed for Shaktimaan’s death as the medical treatment was inadequate.’ ‘It’s tragic. Shaktimaan had died the day he was injured. It was tough for a horse of his size to survive on three legs,’ said Gauri Maulekhi, animal rights activist. It’s unfortunate and sad. It was a painful death for him. This a big issue and very shameful act. The Animal Laws must be tightened. , said Bhuvneshwari GUPTA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) spokesperson.
