Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney is unlikely to feature in United's trip to Eindhoven as PSV Eindhoven play host to the Red Devils in the opening round of UEFA Champions League 2015-16.

Rooney was also missing from Manchester United's winning side that defeated Liverpool 3-1 on Saturday.

Manchester United's manager Louis Van Gaal stated that though Rooney won't be a part of the team travelling to Netherlands, but he might return in time for their next Premier League match against Southampton on September 20.

In conversation with MUTV, Van Gaal said that "He is injured so we have to take care of him. I think he is very important for us and I don’t to take any risks so that’s why he doesn’t play today. I don’t think he will play against PSV Eindhoven, but maybe he shall play at Southampton. We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have three days to go."

It will the first time French-teenager Anthony Martial will play against PSV Eindhoven, after leaving the club for the Red Devils for a staggering transfer fee of £36 million. Martial came off the bench to score his debut goal for United against Liverpool on Saturday.

PSV Eindhoven play Manchester United on 16 September (00:15 AM IST) at Philips Stadion.
