The match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab on May 4 seems to have been hit by some sort of controversy. Of the five people present for the toss Time at Eden Gardens last Wednesday, four were pretty accustomed of what was to follow. Except the match mascot, nothing was new for match referee Amit Sharma, presenter Ravi Shastri and the two captains - Murli Vijay and Gautam Gambhir.

But what followed the proceedings was something very confusing and controversial.

The home captain, Gambhir, spun the coin. Vijay called 'heads'. Amit Sharma walked down to check which side of the coin it was and confirmed ‘Tails it is’, while pointing towards Vijay. The controversy began here. Amit Sharma pointed towards Vijay, whereas it was Gambhir who had actually won the toss. There was a moment of confusion, an exchange of words between Gambhir and Vijay, and then it was the Punjab captain who approached Ravi Shastri and shook his hand.

Vijay said, "We are going to bowl first. There is a prediction of rain but we aren't thinking too much about it. KKR are good chasers so we'd like to put them under pressure.” Gambhir, seeming to have no problem with the confusion, said, "We don't mind batting first. We're playing three spinners and the wicket looks dry so it's a good opportunity to bat.”

The toss however seemed to have little effect on the game as the home side edged past KXIP by 7 runs including a stellar performance by Andre Russell. Considering the noise levels in the stadium, it is quite natural for the match officials to face intense pressure during toss time. But this seemed as clear error and miscommunication between Amit Sharma and Ravi Shastri.

The Twitterati were however very quick to notice this and even quicker to criticise this blunder.
