Wasim Jaffer is back as Mumbai captain even if for a maximum of three matches. In the absence of the regular skipper Ajit Agarkar and Abhishek Nayar, Jaffer will lead Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy all-India one-day tournament to be held in Visakhapatnam from February 26 to March 3.

In fact, Jaffer led the side in the recent one-day match against Gujarat in Pune in Agarkar’s absence.

Jaffer, who relinquished captaincy at the end of the 2011-12 Ranji Trophy season to concentrate on his batting, has again been asked to take charge by the MCA. “I am okay to lead. They (MCA) asked me and I was fine with it as nobody was available to lead,” Jaffer told DNA on Saturday. Jaffer is also the west zone vice-captain for the Deodhar Trophy.

Agarkar, who led Mumbai to their 40th Ranji title and in three of the four one-dayers in the west zone leg of Vijay Hazare Trophy, has been ruled out of the knockout tournament owing to a recurring groin injury.

“I hurt my groin in the last match against Maharashtra and withdrew after bowling 8.2 overs. I need to sort it out. I have been playing with it throughout. Perhaps, I hurried my return a bit. I am hoping to be back in the team for the inter-state T20s,” Agarkar said.

The Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament starts on March 17.

Apart from Nayar, Mumbai’s strike bowler Dhawal Kulkarni is also missing from the Mumbai squad. Nayar, who led Mumbai in the Irani Cup in Agarkar’s absence, is treating his ankle, while Kulkarni is curing his sore heel.

Both are expected to be fit for west zone in the Deodhar Trophy one-day tournament to be held in Guwahati from March 10-13.
