For the recently concluded cricket tour of Zimbabwe, the selectors had reportedly chosen all-rounder Suresh Raina to lead the team. But after an intervention from a top BCCI official, Ajinkya Rahane was selected as skipper. According to Indian Express, Raina was dropped because ex-commissioner of IPL, Lalit Modi, had reportedly named him and two others in an email to ICC.

In the mail sent to ICC, Lalit Modi alleged that Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, and Dwayne Bravo had accepted favours from an Indian real estate tycoon. Two days later, on the same day when the selection committee met, the mail got public. This is when the said BCCI official asked the selection committee to not name Suresh Raina, who was initially considered to lead team India for the 3 ODIs and 2 T20s.

BCCI selection committee protocol dictates that clearance from BCCI president is needed before the names of the players are announced. BCCI president has the authority overrule the selection committee decisions.

At the time of press conference to announce the team for the Zimbabwe tour, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur had said that Jadeja, Raina and Bravo are international players and ICC is not conducting any enquiry, so that meant a clean chit for the players.

Suresh Raina also dismissed the allegations in a statement, "I would like to make my fans around the world aware, and clear the air that I have always played the game in the right spirit and with utmost integrity. I have never been involved in any wrongdoing and all allegations against me are false. Playing cricket is my passion, for whichever team I have represented. I am also figuring out my legal rights to take the right steps ahead in this matter."
