NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram revealed that compatriot Waqar Younis had almost ruined Anil Kumble’s 10-wicket haul in a Test innings by intentionally getting run out.

Recalling the Test match at the Feroze Shah Kotla six years ago when Kumble picked 10 wickets for 74, only the second bowler after Jim Laker to achieve the feat, Akram said, “Kumble had got nine wickets and me and Waqar (Younis) were batting in the crease. Waqar came to me and said ‘How about getting run out?’ so that Kumble does not get his 10th wicket.’’

“I said ‘You can’t deny him the feat if he is destined for it. But I can assure you that I’m not going to give my wicket to Kumble’,” Akram said. “But subsequently it was me who gifted my wicket to Kumble,’’ he added.

Heaping praise on the Indian leggie, Akram said: “He’s a great bowler and I believe he is still a match-winner.’’

The former left-arm pacer also backed the idea of having less India-Pakistan encounters in order to sustain the interest. “To be honest, I’m already sick of so many India-Pakistan series. And it was a great idea to play once in two years to sustain the competitiveness and interest,’’ he added.
