According to a report in The Times of India, Indian test captain Virat Kohli has recommended former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori's name for the post of head-coach of the Indian cricket team.

Currently, Vettori is coaching the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL and Brisbane Heat in Big Bash League, Australia. Vettori has been one of the most successful players for New Zealand in both the longer and shorter format of the game. For the black-caps, he took 362 wickets in Test and 305 in ODIs. He was also a handy lower middle order batsman scoring 4531 runs in Test matches at an average of 30, scoring 6 hundreds in his long illustrious career. He is widely respected across the cricketing world for his amiable behaviour, rarely losing cool inside the field. He is known as a 'thinking cricketer'. Vettori has had decent success as a coach so far in the T-20 circuit, although it is unlikely that RCB will reach the play-offs in this edition of IPL.

Incidentally, Virat Kohli replaced Daniel Vettori as RCB captain in 2013. India is slated to play 18 Test matches between June 2016- May 2017, so the team needs a full-time coach urgently. Former Indian batsman Ravi Shastri was the technical director of the side for almost two years, but his stint ended with the W-T20. India's last coach was Zimbabwean Duncan Fletcher who was with the squad till the last ODI World Cup.

In the last decade or so, recommendations of senior players have been heavily taken into account during the appointment of coaches. Sourav Ganguly batted for Greg Chappel to become the Indian coach although they had a public fallout later. Starting from John Wright, India has had a string of foreign coaches and except Chappel, all have jelled well with the players and have delivered reasonable success. India won the World Cup after 27 years when South African Gary Kirsten was the coach in 2011.

This time though, there were some reports that India A coach Rahul Dravid may get a promotion and take charge of the senior team. TOI reported that Dravid had been approached for the job too. Dravid is currently coaching Delhi Daredevils in the IPL and has been credited for their turnaround in the cash-rich league. According to Sportskeeda, BCCI sources have confirmed that they are looking at the soft-spoken Kiwi as a potential candidate for the coveted coaching job. It is to be seen if Virat has the last word and BCCI indeed goes on to appoint Vettori for this high-profile assignment.
