On a day Chris Gayle treated the Bangalore crowd to another sparkler (a 58-ball 92*) and Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar gave a glimpse of what the cricket world would have been with the two in the same team, it was Dinesh Karthik who was holding the strings of the match.

The Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper’s 37-ball 60 — he smashed three sixes and a four in a Dan Christian over — threatened to take the game away from the Royal Challengers. His ill-timed dismissal pegged Mumbai back. Chasing 157, the visitors needed 10 in the last over bowled by R Vinay Kumar. The pacer kept his poise even though there was that imposing Kieron Pollard at the other end. The equation came down to four off the last ball. Pollard couldn’t get much wood on a splendid yorker as RCB prevailed by two runs.

Mumbai got off to a quick start, reaching 49 for the loss of no wickets in seven overs till the speedbreaker came in the eighth over with Tendulkar’s run out. A couple of overs later, Ponting was stumped by Murali Kartik with the score at 62/2. As the asking rate sailed  north, all seemed lost for Mumbai until the 17th over when Karthik took Christian to the cleaners. But with an unresourceful penultimate over and two wickets falling in the last, Mumbai lost the plot.

Earlier, Gayle’s knock ensured Bangalore finished with a decent total. The hosts had a slow start to their innings, losing Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck in the third over to a  full-length delivery by Mitchell Johnson.

Gayle, RCB’s everyday man, chose to be his sceptic self in the initial phase as he stood witness to the fall of at least five wickets. Mumbai’s strategy to contain Gayle seemed to work well till the eighth over following which the West Indian opened the floodgates by dispatching Jasprit Bumrah for a four and a six. Gayle completed his decimation of Mumbai’s bowlers with a six of the last delivery.

Young Bumrah, who plays for Gujarat, ended up with impressive figures of 3 for 32.
