Usain Bolt brings 2014 season to premature end, will not compete in Diamond League event

Organisers of the Diamond League have confirmed that the Jamaican sprint superstar Usain Bolt has brought his 2014 season to a premature end, as he would not compete in Thursday's final event in Zurich. The Olympic 100-metre and world record holder ran 9.98 seconds indoors in Poland on Saturday. Bolt's coach Glen Mills made the decision.

Bolt, who has run only three races this season, won gold with Jamaica's 4x100m relay team at the Commonwealth Games, The BBC reported. Diamond League Final meet director Patrick Magyar said that Bolt's body has delivered tremendous performances over the last years, but added that it is a body and not a machine.

Magyar said that if an athlete of that level and his coach feel more rest is needed, they are certainly not going to question this and fully support this decision. Bolt only ran his first 100-metre of the year in an exhibition race on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach on August 17. He posted a time of 10.6 seconds before turning out in Warsaw on Saturday. His last competitive individual appearance at the 100-metre came in Brussels last year, the report added.
