US soccer star Landon Donovan files for divorce from actress wife

US soccer star Landon Donovan has filed for divorce from his actress wife Bianca Kajlich.

According to the divorce petition, Donovan and the Rules of Engagement star married on New Year's Eve in 2006, but had been separated since October 2009.

"We remain the closest of friends and will always be important parts of each other's lives," the New York Daily News quoted ex-couple as saying in a joint statement.

Rumours swirled over the summer that the two were on the verge of reconciling following Team USA's elimination from the World Cup, but it turned out to be untrue.

The couple, who have no children, cited irreconcilable differences, according to the petition.

The Los Angeles Galaxy forward is seeking spousal support from his ex, as well as attorney fees.
