Don Bosco, Matunga, overcame Dhirubhai Ambani International School, BKC, 34-25 in the quarterfinals of the MSSA under-16 inter-school basketball tournament at the St Joseph’s, Wadala, basketball court, on Friday.

The final score flattered the winning side as it was a neck-to-neck contest till the final quarter.

Don Bosco grabbed the lead in the first quarter and looked comfortable at 10-4 at the end of the first period. Dhirubhai Ambani hit back in the second quarter, halfway through which, they had drawn level at 12-12.

The Matunga side was rattled but held their nerve to establish a seven point lead by half time.

In offence, Dhirubhai Ambani were heavily reliant on Neeraj Delima, who top scored for them with 20 points. The over dependence on him, however, was their downfall as Don Bosco seemed to have identified him as the main offensive threat and double teamed him for the second half.

Don Bosco’s Darsheel Doshi was substituted in the third quarter as he was on four fouls and one more would have ruled him out of the game.

Besides foul violations, Bosco found themselves in trouble in terms of score again as the side from BKC scored five without reply and threatened to draw level again.

They were rescued by substitute Kieth Fernandes who scored two three pointers in the dying minutes of the period to take his side eight points clear.

Dhirubhai Ambani looked out of steam in the last quarter as it produced a lacklustre contest compared to the first three. The six players from Don Bosco evenly spread the points between them.

Ball controller, Dean D’Souza top scored with seven points and he was aided by Anuj Mehta and Simon Paul who showed some good dribbling skills but could not finish his moves with baskets.

Rebounder, Alden Kodiyan was very good in defense and blocked a number of attempts from the Dhirubhai players.
