Special children of Holy Cross Convent High School in Thane won awards at the state- and national-level Olympics Championship. Around 16 children from the school participated in swimming and table tennis events held in the tournament.
In the Special Olympics National Championship for table tennis held in Rajasthan, Reshma Shaikh won a gold medal in singles and a silver at the doubles game. She represented Maharashtra and emerged a winner from among 20 participants. Last month, two state-level swimming competitions were held in the state where 15 children participated and won medals.
“We’ve been training these children in sports since four years and they’ve been actively participating in the tournaments. But, this is for the first time that they’ve won medals and made us proud of their hard work,” said Divya Gohil, a schoolteacher who also trains children in table tennis.
Seven children participated in the Special Olympics State Swimming Championship held at Kolhapur. They brought home three gold, one silver and three bronze in various swimming events that were held. On September 21, The Association for Welfare of Mentally Handicapped held a Maharashtra state swimming tournament where 10 students participated and won six golds and four bronze medals in various events.
“All those children who are interested in sports are provided training. For swimming, we have a private coach, Milind Shelar. As we do not have a swimming pool on our premises, we have taken permission from the municipal commissioner who has allotted three days a week for our children to practise.
On Tuesday and Thursday, we take the children to the pool to be trained by our coach. On Saturdays, it is the responsibility of parents to bring the children.We are trying our best to provide these children with as much exposure as possible,” says Snehal Khadakban, another teacher at the school.
Principal Ancy Anthony says, “After participating for the last four years, our children have won medals at the state- and national-level this year. This is a great achievement not only for the kids but also our teachers. They put in all their efforts in grooming them and are always supportive of the children and their.
