Former tennis champion Doris Hart, who won each Grand Slam tournament at least once, including managing three Wimbledon titles on one day, has died at the age of 89 at her home in Coral Gables, Florida

Hart, who overcame a life-threatening leg infection as a child, became one of the world's best tennis players in the decade after World War II.

Her death was announced by the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which did not specify the cause.

Hart, Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova are the only three women to have won singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles in each of the four Grand Slam tournaments. The feat is referred to as a career boxed set.

Hart was famous for her smarts, hard ground-strokes and her mastery on drop shots. She won the French Open twice, Wimbledon and the Australian Open once each. She also won 29 major doubles titles and was ranked World No. 1 in 1951, the Guardian reported.

That year, Hart had her finest tournament at Wimbledon, when she won three titles. She defeated friend Shirley Fry in the singles before joining her to win the women's doubles. She then paired with Frank Sedgman to win the mixed doubles title.

All three matches were played on the same day because of rain delays.

She also won titles in 1954-55 at the US Championships, which later became the US Open.
