Technical committee proposes Ranji points revamp

The panel also proposed to reformat the one-day inter-state seniors' tournament and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament by forming four groups from across the country, as against the current zonal system. In other words, these tournaments will follow the Ranji Trophy fixtures system.

The technical committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed to tweak the Ranji Trophy points system so as to encourage teams to play attacking cricket and go for outright wins.

The committee, headed by former India skipper Anil Kumble, has suggested that the system of awarding three points for a first-innings lead be abolished. Instead, the panel wants the BCCI to introduce a bonus point system for batting and bowling. One bonus point will be awarded to a team scoring 300 runs in 85 overs. The same will be applicable for a team taking seven wickets in 85 overs. However, the current system of awarding six points for an outright win and a bonus point, if applicable, will continue. For the record, the recommendations will have to be ratified by the board's working committee.

Considering that India are hosting the ICC World T20 in March-April next year, the technical committee has proposed to postpone the Duleep Trophy, the inter-zone first-class tournament. The panel, which also comprises chief selector Sandeep Patil and former India pacer Debasis Mohanty, has suggested to revamp the format of the Deodhar Trophy. The five-team inter-zonal one-day tournament will now be a three-team affair involving the winner of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (inter-state one-day tournament) and two teams picked by the national selection committee. According to a source, the NKP Salve Challenger tournament, which follows the same format, has been deferred.

The panel also proposed to reformat the one-day inter-state seniors' tournament and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament by forming four groups from across the country, as against the current zonal system. In other words, these tournaments will follow the Ranji Trophy fixtures system.

"It was a fruitful discussion with an increased focus on strengthening domestic cricket. These recommendations are a summary of three major meetings, which includes the captains and coaches conclave and the technical committee meetings, this year. We hope that some of the measures suggested, will make domestic cricket more interesting and challenging," Kumble said in a media release.

The committee hailed the BCCI's tough approach towards chucking. It committee recommended that the International Cricket Council's protocols be "followed in toto". It also expressed concerns over the preparation of wickets at some of the venues and suggested various measures to improve the reporting process, which will help in taking appropriate corrective measures.

"Some of these recommendations could have a long-term impact and help in achieving our objectives and address our immediate demands of the forthcoming cricket season. I am confident that we will be able to increase the competitiveness in the upcoming domestic season," BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said.
