Swiss ace Roger Federer aims for World number one ranking prior to Paris Masters

Seventeen-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer, is aiming for the world number one spot as he is set to compete at the Paris Masters, which starts on Tuesday.

Federer will battle with Novak Djokovic for the world number one spot, and there is also the matter of the final eight places, for the season ending WTA finals in London.

The Swiss won his 82nd career tournament and sixth Basel trophy on Sunday, extending his winning streak to 12 matches, and his overall tour record to 66 wins and 10 defeats, Sport24 reported.

Djokovic has been absent in recent weeks, after his wife gave birth to their first child, Stefan, while his lead over Federer has been slashed by a huge margin.

Federer can also pick up further points, when he plays the Davis Cup final against France, which begins on November 21 in Lille.

The maestro said that it would be 'very special' to reclaim the number one spot, adding that the top spot is what it's all about in the game. Federer added, he is pleased to have a shot at the number one ranking.

Federer said that he is sure of Djokovic fighting it out hard for the number one spot, adding that he is very happy for the Serb.

World number three Rafael Nadal is out for the season, as he is set to have an appendix operation, while Swiss number two Stanislas Wawrinka, is guaranteed of a place in London.

Croat Marin Cilic, ranked seven, qualifies automatically as US Open champion.
