Former England spinner Graeme Swann believes that although Joe Root is destined to captain his country, it would be a disaster to give him the role of captaincy at any point in the next five years.

Root was seen as the potential candidate for replacing under-fire captain Alastair Cook, who regained his form in the Grenada Test, prior to the second Test against the West Indies.

Swann said that he had little doubt Root would lead England at some point, but insisted that to make him England captain any time in the next five years would be a disaster, the Mirror reported.

Swann further said that Root has a natural cheeky chappy personality and he would need to change and become more mature to be the captain.

The right-handed batsman scored runs of 83 and 59 in the first Test against the West Indies before hitting an unbeaten 182 in Grenada.
