Amidst the gloom that befell the Indian Premier League thanks to an expelled cheerleader exposing the underbelly of cricket as entertainment, a mobile network is giving fans reason to cheer home team Mumbai Indians with its new initiative called Mumbai Meri Jaan.

If the 1956 Dev Anand-starrer CID gave Mumbaikars an eternal tune, ‘Zara hatke zara bachke, yeh hai Bombay meri jaan’ encapsulating the essence of the city, a peppier rendition of the tune has been introduced as part of the initiative.

While the Mohammed Rafi-Geeta Dutt tune remains the same, the lyrics have got a makeover executed by celebrated lyricist, dialogue writer and singer Swanand Kirkire.

“The lyrics of the new ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ capture the true spirit of the city," said Kirkire, known for his work in hits like 3 Idiots and Lage Raho Munnabhai, among others. "Though it's being pitched as a song for the IPL cricket team, any Mumbaikar will easily relate with it. I got a free hand while writing the lyrics which were then set to the tune of the iconic ‘Zara hatke zara bachke'tune. The treatment is also new.”

Singers Shilpa Rao and Raman Mahadevan have lent their voices to the song, the video of which reflects the city's cricket culture.

Speaking about the song, Rao said, “‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’ is something you would hear in stadiums when your favourite team is playing. Once the nagaras and shouts come on, it becomes inspiring for us. This inspiration and excitement is what we’ve tried to showcase in the song. It’s catchy and new, yet has the charm of the old.”

So leave aside all the ill feeling caused by the maligning of your favourite cricketers and join in Mumbai’s Biggest Chorus in support of the team: 'Cricket toh hai religion, ek dharm hai yaha/Yeh toh shehero ka sheher hai, aisa duja hai kahan… Zara bachke zara hatke hum hai Mumbai Indians’
