Ever since the spot-fixing scam surfaced into the public sphere, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) chief IS Bindra has been one of the few dissenting voices who candidly questioned N Srinivasan’s position as the BCCI chief and the general manner in which the board dealt with the sordid saga.

It now emerges that two days before the working committee meeting on June 10, Bindra had urged the BCCI’s interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya to take some radical steps to cleanse the game. In a letter to Dalmiya, a copy of which is with dna, Bindra had proposed that Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, the two IPL teams under scrutiny, be suspended till their probe was complete.

He went to the extent of suggesting that the RR and CSK must not be allowed “to participate in the CLT20 and no funds out of the central revenues should be released to them”.

Bindra also wrote that the probe panel must be reconstituted. A part of the letter reads: “Justice J Chouta and R Balasubramanian are not suitable for conducting an independent probe. The manner in which they were appointed disqualifies them for the job.

“They were appointed by a group which had nothing to do with the BCCI and did not include any representative of the Board. The appointment of a probe panel is within the jurisdiction of the working committee.”

He recommended that the working committee invite Justices Kapadia, Venkatachaliah or Mukul Mudgal, “subject to their consent”. “Your professed desire to clean up the system has my unequivocal support. It is indeed encouraging to note your assertions to the public. Nostalgically, it reminds me of the Jaggu of yore, and gives hope that the old spark will ignite to arrest the decay and mitigate the wrongs wrought on the game of cricket,” Bindra wrote.

He reiterated how the mood in India was that of shock and despondency. “The cricketing world has been rocked with a string of shocking exposures. The board is facing peril and its very existence is threatened due to the pernicious acts of a few bad apples. The public is clamouring for transparency, principled management, and effective leadership. At an extreme, some are suggesting a takeover of cricket administration by the government.”

The way forward, Bindra insisted, was to make “bold, fair and independent decisions” without “any fear of favour”. He said, “We should refuse to be blackmailed by undesirable elements. Moreover, right-minded people need to team up and lead from the front.”

MS should disassociate from Co: Savant
MS Dhoni’s alleged conflict of interest situation has not gone down well with the BCCI, with its new treasurer Ravi Savant saying he should disassociate himself from the company. “Dhoni should immediately disassociate himself from the management firm while he is captain. Dhoni should be given a notice for conflict of interest if this was not part of his contract earlier,” Savant said.
