Sports
The day was June 23, 1979. Having been knocked earlier in the tournament, our only role left was to wear our India blazers and appear in the parade just before the start of the final between defending champions West Indies and hosts' England. West Indies had lost four of their top batsmen for just 99. Like many others, I began to to get up from my seat when our little genius Gundappa Viswanath held my hand, asking me to sit back and watch Viv Richards bat. I am so thankful to Vishy that I watched one of the most entertaining partnerships in the World Cup till date. 'King' Richards was playing like a champion but it was Collis King, who surprised the world with his dominant innings of 86. To watch that classy knock in the company of our own genius Viswanath, one can imagine how useful his explanation of situation and strokes could have helped me in my remaining career. Even now, I pray to God to give me another opportunity to sit and watch another final like that in the company of my hero!
