Despite being pulled up by the Supreme Court for attending BCCI's Working Committee meetings, sidelined president N Srinivasan was present during the emergent working committee meet.

Srivasan was in spotlight in Chennai on Sunday as he attended the BCCI members meeting to decide dates for its Annual General Meeting. The board decided to conduct elections on March 2 in Chennai.

On December 9, the Supreme Court special bench of Justice TS Thakur and FM Kalifullah severely criticised Srinivasan for attending Working Committee meetings as Tamil Nadu Cricket Association's representative despite claiming to have sidestepped from its working.

"Your passion for cricket is just little too much," the Apex Court had observed. "How can you keep attending the BCCI's Working Committee meetings as TNCA representative when you have been asked to keep a distance from its working?" Justice Thakur had asked Srinivasan.

In reply, Srinivasan's counsel Kapil Sibal apologised to the Bench. "In retrospect, I may say that I should not have done this," was how Sibal admitted before the Court.

During the meeting on Sunday, Srinivasan announced that "the board has decided to file a review petition of the Supreme Court's judgement on January 22 that has made the board liable to public scrutiny".

It has been reliably learnt that the working committee was briefed by the board's legal cell about the severe implications of the scope of Article 226. The members were made to believe that "BCCI's autonomy will be impacted with the directive".

It was Maharashtra Cricket Association's Ajay Shirke who called upon the Board members to "first clean up the mess as per SC suggestions before challenging the Apex Court".

BCCI to file defamation case against Verma

According to sources, Srinivasan urged BCCI members to file criminal defamation cases against Aditya Verma, petitioner in the IPL spot-fixing case, and the insiders within the board (read Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, IS Bindra and former BCCI chief AC Muthiah) who have been allegedly backing him.

Srinivasan is understood to have stressed the need to get to the source of Verma's financial resources. He also kept using Union minister for finance Arun Jaitley's name in order to flout rumours of ruling BJP's support.

However dna had reported since SC orders how Pawar camp is constantly in touch with the ruling party and it would be only after February 14, when prime minister Narendra Modi will share dais with Pawar in his home turf Baramati in Maharashtra, that any decision to this regard will be taken.

Meanwhile, Verma told dna that "he would be filing contempt proceedings against BCCI for allowing Srinivasan to attend the meeting despite SC orders".

The BCCI also decided to increase the monthly gratis scheme for all former cricketers by 50 per cent subject to maximum for Rs 50,000 per month effective from January 2015.
