Sporting events cancelled due to Bal Thackeray's demise

The death of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray forced the cancellation of several sports event scheduled in Mumbai on Sunday. Thackeray, 86, passed away at his Mumbai residence on Saturday and his funeral is scheduled to be held on Sunday.

The opening day of the Mumbai racing season, which was to commence on Sunday, has been postponed by the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC). The races were to be held at the Mahalaxmi Race Course. The revised date of opening day’s meeting is yet to be decided.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) too decided to postpone the I-League match between Pune FC and Air India at the Balewadi Sports Complex.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) cancelled the Shatkar, Police and Cosmopolitan Shield matches that were to be held on Sunday and Monday while the national 9-ball and 8-ball Pool Championship, being held at the National Sports Club of India in Worli, too was called off on Sunday.
