Serbian champions and league leaders Red Star Belgrade were held to a 1-1 home draw by bitter city foes Partizan in the SuperLiga after they conceded a late equaliser which spoiled their 72nd anniversary on Saturday.

The result left 1991 European Cup winners Red Star six points clear of Partizan at the top of the 16-team standings after the game produced few fireworks on the pitch and plenty on the terraces.

Both sets of fans lit dozens of flares and hurled loud firecrackers throughout the contest which was held up for several minutes in the early stages for billowing smoke at Partizan's end to clear.

Riot police were deployed in and around the stadium to ensure the fixture, which has a long history of crowd trouble, was as incident-free as possible.

Gabonese midfielder Guelor Canga gave Red Star a controversial 33rd-minute lead when he drilled in a crisp low shot from 15 metres after good work on the left flank by John Ruiz and Richmond Boakye.

However, television replays suggested the ball had gone out of bounds before Ruiz dragged it back for Boakye to tee up Canga, sparking protests from Partizan's players.

The visitors dominated the second half and striker Uros Djurdjevic levelled with a close-range header in the 87th minute to delight the away section in the 45,000 crowd.

"Red Star's goal should not have stood but either way we had to take risks in the second half and it paid off," said Partizan coach Marko Nikolic.

His counterpart Miodrag Bozovic said: "We are sad that we couldn't give our fans a fitting birthday present after a poor second half." (Writing by Zoran Milosavljevic, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
