Praveen Amre was a disappointed man on Thursday. It was the second successive time that Mumbai had lost the first innings points in Ranji Trophy this season at the Wankhede.

After Jammu & Kashmir in the first round, it was Madhya Pradesh's turn to embarass Mumbai in their own backyard. The match ended in a draw with the visitors walking away with three points for the first innings lead. Mumbai had to be content with one point.

Mumbai are pushed to third position with 11 points in Group A behind Karnataka (25) and Baroda (12) while Madhya Pradesh are seventh with eight points.

The fourth and final day was more of a formality as an outcome was difficult considering the batting form that the hosts are in. Young Shreyas Iyer notched up his second century in as many matches, slamming an unbeaten 142. Iyer, who cracked 153 in the first innings of the previous game against Bengal, was given a reprieve on 10 and he took full advantage of the largesse to remain unconquered after hitting 15 fours and two sixes. The match was called off when the hosts were 311/4 with teenager Sarfaraz Khan unbeaten on 52 after adding 106 runs for the fifth wicket with Iyer, who faced 181 balls and batted for 258 minutes.

MP, who took a 134-run lead on Wednesday by making 538/7 in reply to the hosts' 404 all out, declared on Thursday morning at the overnight score to try and beat the former champions outright but failed in their ploy.

Had 20-year-old Iyer been caught at gully by Ankit Sharma off Avesh Khan when Mumbai were on 42/1, the visitors could have put some pressure on the home team. Iyer and opener Aditya Tare (57) took the team's score past the 100 with a second wicket stand of 89 runs.

Tare and skipper Suryakumar Yadav (1) departed in quick succession on either side of lunch to raise MP's hopes for a win. But Iyer and Siddesh Lad (43) dashed their hopes with a stand of 95 for the fourth wicket.
For MP, medium pacer Puneet Datey was the most successful bowler 3/43 in 13 overs.

Coach Amre said they will be hoping to get points in the remaining league games. "We hope to win the new few games. However, there is good news. Chances of Wasim Jaffer and Abhishek Nayar returning to the side are higher and this will strengthen our batting line-up," said Amre.

Mumbai next take on Tamil Nadu in an away game from January 21-24.
