Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has claimed that he wanted to play in next year's tournament, but needed clarity on his role and wants the selectors to tell him what they expect from him.

The veteran all-rounder played the last of his 216 ODIs in June 2013, but was included in Pakistan's 30-man preliminary squad for the World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.

Pakistan's selection committee is likely to announce the final 15-man squad on January 7 after watching some of the probables in the Pentangular Cup competition, which started in Karachi on Wednesday, The Dawn reported.

Malik said that he wanted to play for Pakistan, adding that the World Cup is a big event and every cricketer wants to play in it. He claimed that it was portrayed that he doesn't want to play, adding that he was frustrated over being left out but always wanted to play.

Malik admitted that he is not happy with the selection process. He claimed that he has a problem with the system because the cricketers want clarity on selection and want to know what is expected of them and how many matches they are going to play because it increases confidence when a player knows how many matches he is going to play.

The all-rounder further said that he is of the opinion that players who know the conditions of Australia and New Zealand can play well there.
