With the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) set to go to polls on June 17, the 'Cricket First' faction is making the right noises.

On Friday, vice-president hopeful Rahul Shewale of the Shiv Sena promised voters that the panel, led by Dr Vijay Patil, will build toilet complexes at each of the city's sprawling maidans. Shewale, who is a Lok Sabha MP, also announced that his group will facilitate the construction of international stadiums in Mulund and Vikhroli.

"The Shiv Sena is committed to improve the cricketing infrastructure in the city. Our leader, Uddhav Thackerayji, has big plans for the Mumbai Cricket Association. We will ensure the association gets every clearance from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. We have already prepared a master plan for toilet complexes at every maidan in Mumbai. We will also build two world-class stadiums," Shewale told dna. "Everyone knows the state of our maidans. We are here to change things. We will build change rooms for the players. Ambulances will be stationed at every maidan," he added.

The 'Cricket First' group also boasts another powerful Sena leader, Pratap Sarnaik, a three-time MLA from Thane. Sarnaik is also set to contest for the post of vice-president. The panel will also field former Test players Pravin Amre, Lalchand Rajput and Abey Kuruvilla. According to sources, the Sena can garner 60-75 of the 329 votes. Dr Patil, on his part, is hopeful of getting 150. If the faction gets its numbers right, then the Bal Mahadalkar group, headed by incumbent president and Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, could be in for big trouble.

There is talk that Pawar, who has been in charge of the MCA for well over a decade, is leaving no stone unturned this time. "For the first time in many years, saheb is calling up voters and urging them to support his panel. He is reminding them of the two state-of-the-art clubhouses (Bandra-Kurla Complex and Kandivli) the association built during his tenure," an MCA insider said.
