Nagpada police in the wee hours of Sunday arrested seven alleged bookies whom were accepting bets on the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kings XI Punjab. The police are also probing whether the arrested bookies were in touch with other top bookies wanted by the police.
Those arrested have been identified as Haneef Suma, 39, Deepak Patel, 32, Sanjay Saluja, 34, Idris Kapadia, 30, Vicky Kanojia, 27, Mehboob Wakawala, 32, and Ashish Parikh, 35. All natives of Nadiad and Baroda in Gujarat.
According to the police, on receipt of specific information that bets are being placed on the IPL match in one of the rooms of Bombay International Hotel at Maulana Azad Road in Nagpada, a raid was conducted in the evening.
"All the accused persons in the room were found to be involved in cricket betting and were watching live telecast of CSK vs Kings XI Punjab match on television.," said an officer from Nagpada police station.
The police have seized property worth Rs 25 lakh including 72 mobile phones, two LCD, two set top boxes, two laptops, a voice recorder, 20 mobile phone chargers, and two SUVs.
"Bookies have revealed that they had procured SIM cards by furnishing bogus documents. The arrested bookies are originally from Gujarat and they appear to be part of a larger betting syndicate. We are investigating about their clients and the monetary dealings which they have done so far," the officer said.
