While cricket fans are making their plans for Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell Test to be played here next month, the famous dabbawalas, who make daily lunch-box deliveries, have also decided to pay tribute to the master.
About 50-100 dabbawalas have decided to attend this Test match and cheer for Tendulkar. They will also present the legend a traditional dabba (lunchbox).
The dabbawalas have earlier gifted a dabba to celebrities from around the world, including Britain’s Prince Charles.
Gangaram Talekar, who is in-charge of Nutan Tiffin Box Supplier Association (NTBSA), a 130-year-old association, told dna, “We are working on a plan where about 50 dabbawalas will take a few days off from the routine job and attend the Test match.
“We also love cricket and we are proud of Sachin. We love watching cricket and this will be the first time we will be watching a game from the stands at Wankhede Stadium.”
He added, “We will buy a ticket from our own pockets for the Test scheduled from November 14-18. Some of our youngsters also play gully cricket.”
For years, these dabbawalas have been the epitome of perfection when it comes to delivering lunch boxes across the city. Over 5,000 dabbawalas work with the NTBSA. Most of the dabbawalas from Pune district.
The dabbawalas’ accuracy in delivering home-cooked meals to more than two lakh office-goers on time every day has drawn praise from across the world, including business schools, who want to study their system. They even have the six sigma certification in recognition of their efficiency to unfailingly deliver lunch boxes daily.
