Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has defended PSV Eindhoven's Hector Moreno's horrific tackle on Luke Shaw as the Irishman labelled the challenge "brilliant". Shaw got injured within the first quarter of the match, suffering a double fracture in his right leg.

Keane, who calls Moreno's tackle "brilliant", is famous for ending former Manchester Ctiy's Alf-Inge Håland in 2001.

"I thought it was a brilliant challenge", he stated while talking to ITV. "'I love the physical side of the game. You can always tell by player reactions and none of the United lads at the time, and players are best judges because they are nearest the tackle, didn't react over the top thinking it was a bad challenge, obviously at the end of it."

Though Keane praises Monreno's tackle, he says Shaw was unlucky to be on the receiving end. "When players are travelling that speed, defending like that, injuries are going to happen. I'm surprised there are not more like it. It was more of an accident at the end of with his trailing foot" Keane added.

To add further support towards Moreno's tackle on Shaw, former referee Howard Webb defended Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli's decision not to hand Moreno a red card. Webb, who works with BT Sport as a football pundit said "Luke Shaw's injury was awful and I wish him a speedy recovery. But the referee made the right decision. Moreno stretches with his right leg, which plays the ball cleanly. His left leg makes some contact on the follow-through, but it is always tucked away under him and not aimed towards Luke Shaw. Luke is unlucky in that he gets his studs caught and twists, which causes the injury, but I think the referee made the right decision."

Louis Van Gaal, who insisted that Moreno should have seen a red card for the challenge, addressed Shaw's injury in a post-match press conference saying,"I’m not a doctor so I cannot say, but when you have a double fracture it is four to six months. But you can never say that in advance. He won’t play in the group stage, I don’t think. I hope he will play again this season."

Reports suggest that 20-year old Shaw, who underwent a surgery, could be out for six months.
