“Please let us sit here close to the court. We have paid Rs 17000 each just to watch Federer,” a couple pleaded with IPTL media manager who was asking them to leave the media enclosure here at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

When told that Federer will not be playing on Saturday, the couple protested: “What? But the organisers sold tickets with a promise that Federer will be playing all three days.” they argued. The India leg of the four-leg tennis league launched by Mahesh Bhupati got under way in Delhi today but all the talk and excitement was about Federer. Tickets are priced at a minimum of Rs 3000 to box seats costing Rs 49,000 for three days. The entire value of the most costliest sporting event hosted in New Delhi is based on the presence of one man: Federer.

Of course there is the top ranked Novak Djokovic too and the presence of the two top guys for a weekend of tennis is going to be an incredible experience. The Federer fever has been on for sometime and took off after Federer asked fans in India to advise him on what to do in the country he is visiting for the first time.

The IPTL has some of the word’s best players. Seven players from the top 25 ATP ranked players are playing for the four teams, not to count legends like Pete Sampras.

Even Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza’s dream of playing alongside this tennis legend is going to come true as the two of them would team up for the mixed doubles on Sunday.“Well what do I say?” was how Sania reacted on her teaming up with Federer. “It will be a huge honour to share the court with Roger. Really looking forward to performing in front of the home fans here,” she added.

On Monday, Djoko will play Federer. No one will talk Parliament that day.
