Singapore's Joseph Schooling made life harder for his childhood idol Michael Phelps by being the fastest qualifier for the men's 100 metres butterfly final on Friday while Phelps secured a spot with the fifth-fastest time.

On Thursday, Schooling beat Phelps in their 100 metres butterfly heats to the semi-finals with the fastest time. The Texas-based swimmer, a 100m butterfly bronze medallist at last year's world championships, set a time of 51.41 seconds with boyhood idol Phelps second in the heat with a 51.60 that left him fourth overall.

But this is not the first time that the 22-year-old is meeting his boyhood idol Phelps. A fan since the beginning, he was 10 when he first met Phelps. The following picture was clicked in 2008 when Schooling was only 13.

Schooling's father used to seek Phelps' advice on where he should send his kid for swimming training. According to NBC broadcast, Phelps had suggested boarding school Bolles in Jacksonville.

Phelps, who cut short his participation in the IM medal ceremony to race off the pool deck and get ready for the butterfly semi-finals, touched in 51.58 seconds. The 31-year-old American had to storm home in the second length having turned in last place at the 50m mark.
