India in swimming at Rio 2016 will be represented by Sajan Prakash and Shivani Kataria. The duo was selected by the Swimming Federation on India on the basis of a rule that allows one male and one female competitor to participate provided the swimmer took part in the last World Championships.

Prakash, who comes from Kerala, grabbed headlines early in 2015 when he created history by winning six gold and three silver medals at the National Games of India. He is a national record holder in 200m butterfly, the event he will compete in Rio. He also holds the record for the 1,500m freestyle.

Shivani, who will participate in the 200m freestyle, was the only contender among the women since she was the only Indian woman to compete at the last World Championship.

While the expectation of a medal or even a place in the final for the duo is highly unlikely, they will be hoping for individual improvement. If they better their personal best and advance from the heats, it will be a monumental experience for their future.
